In a significant move that marks the first such action in over four decades, approximately 1,500 steelworkers from Port Talbot and Llanwern in Wales are set to commence an "all-out indefinite strike action" starting July 8. This decision comes as a response to Tata Steel's proposed plans to eliminate 2,800 jobs and shut down its blast furnaces, sparking widespread concern among the workforce.

Unite the Union has highlighted this strike as a critical juncture in the UK's steel industry, underscoring the workers' determination to fight not only for their livelihoods but also for the future of their communities and the steel sector in Wales. According to Unite general secretary Sharon Graham, the strike aims to pressure Tata Steel into reconsidering its "disastrous plans," with the union fully supporting the workers' cause.
The escalation follows initial actions by Unite members, including working to rule and imposing an overtime ban earlier in the week. The union has also pointed out that the Opposition Labour Party has urged Tata Steel to pause its job cut plans until after the July 4 general election, advocating for discussions with a newly elected government. Labour has committed to investing GBP 3 billion in the UK steel industry if victorious, a pledge secured through Unite's efforts, and has prioritized emergency talks with Tata Steel post-election.
Tata Steel expressed disappointment over the strike action, emphasizing ongoing discussions with UK trade unions regarding its GBP 1.25-billion investment plan. This plan involves transitioning to Electric Arc Furnace technology at Port Talbot, which is expected to preserve 5,000 jobs, create additional indirect employment opportunities, and significantly reduce CO2 emissions by 5 million tonnes annually.
The company remains hopeful about its future in providing high-quality, low-CO2 steel products. Despite the current industrial action, Tata Steel's spokesperson conveyed optimism about restructuring UK operations to sustain the business through this technological transition.
