The Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union has expressed approval for the newly announced social security scheme for gig workers in the union budget. They have called on both the government and aggregator companies to ensure that gig workers' data is promptly submitted to the authorities. This step is crucial for workers to benefit from the scheme.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman recently revealed a social security initiative targeting one crore gig workers associated with online platforms. The government plans to issue identity cards to these workers and assist them in registering on the e-Shram portal. This registration will enable them to access various government welfare benefits.
Importance of Data Submission
Shaik Salauddin, president of the union, highlighted that gig and platform workers have been anticipating such schemes since the introduction of the Code on Social Security in 2020. However, he noted that this code has allegedly not been implemented yet. He emphasised that any welfare scheme for gig workers should be executed without preconditions.
The social security schemes rely on data from the e-Shram 2.0 portal, which must be provided by aggregator companies. Without this data submission, workers cannot access these benefits. Salauddin urged both the government and companies to ensure timely data transfer so that drivers, delivery personnel, and home-based workers can benefit from the scheme.
Facilitating Access to Benefits
The initiative aims to support gig workers by providing them with identity cards and facilitating their registration on the e-Shram portal. This process will help them gain access to various government social welfare schemes. The union's call for action underscores the importance of collaboration between the government and aggregator firms to make this scheme effective.
The union's appeal highlights a significant step towards improving the welfare of gig workers in India. By ensuring data submission, these workers can finally access much-needed social security benefits. The government's move is a positive development, but its success hinges on effective implementation and cooperation from all stakeholders involved.
