Timberland, the renowned American brand known for its outdoor footwear and apparel, has made a comeback in India through Reliance Retail. The brand is now available on AJIO, Reliance's fashion e-commerce platform. Timberland had previously exited the Indian market in 2015 due to fierce competition and a legal dispute with Woodland, a local brand with a similar logo and product line.

Reliance Retail's Expanding Portfolio
Reliance Industries recently highlighted in its earnings report that AJIO is expanding its brand offerings. New additions include ASOS, H&M, and Timberland. This move is part of Reliance Retail's strategy to enhance its fashion portfolio. In 2009, Reliance Brands, a subsidiary of Reliance Retail, had entered into a distribution and licensing agreement with Timberland.
Reliance Retail continues to diversify its offerings beyond fashion. The company is scaling up its quick-commerce operations, similar to other retailers and FMCG companies. JioMart is piloting this hyperlocal delivery model by leveraging its store network to serve customers efficiently.
Strengthening Food and Beverage Offerings
In addition to fashion and quick-commerce, Reliance Retail is bolstering its food and beverage segment. The company has introduced Armani Cafe at Mumbai's Jio World Plaza, offering an Italian fine dining experience. This initiative is part of their Premium Brands business strategy to enhance their F&B portfolio.
Reliance already operates 18 Pret A Manger outlets in India. Pret A Manger is a well-known UK-based chain offering freshly made food and organic coffee. This expansion reflects Reliance's commitment to providing diverse culinary experiences to Indian consumers.
The reintroduction of Timberland through AJIO marks a significant step for Reliance Retail in strengthening its fashion segment. By adding international brands like Timberland, ASOS, and H&M, the company aims to cater to a broader audience. This strategy aligns with their ongoing efforts to expand their retail footprint across various sectors in India.
