Common people are likely to witness the heat of high prices of vegetables, particularly tomatoes and onions in the coming days. The prices are expected to reach Rs 300 per kilogramme in the near future and cause other vegetable prices to soar as well, according to wholesale sellers.
More than a month has passed since tomato prices began to decline. Additionally, rain fury has made worse the supply, pushing up prices even more. After dropping to about Rs 120 per kilo the previous week, prices have since risen to at least Rs 200.

Tomatoes retail for Rs 150-200 in Azadpur Mandi, the largest vegetable wholesale market in Asia. The rain has affected tomato prices throughout India, both in the south and the centre. Beginning in early August, superior variety wholesale prices for tomatoes in Karnataka and Maharashtra reached all-time highs of between 180 and 200 rupees per kilogramme.
According to a survey by Crisil Market Intelligence and Analytics, expensive onion prices will put a strain on the household finances of the average person after tomatoes.
According to the study, which was published on Friday, the panic buying in February and March 2023 has caused the shelf life of rabi onions to be decreased by one to two months. As a result, rather than by the end of September, the supplies from the previous rabi season may have greatly diminished by then.
According to the research, such an event might prolong the present lean season by 15 to 20 days, thereby reducing supply and raising prices.
The report states that during this time, prices could drastically increase to between Rs 60 and Rs 70 per kg.
