The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has initiated a significant step by forming a committee to oversee ropeway safety and technical standards. This committee, known as the Empowered Committee for Ropeways Technical Evaluation, Certification and Safety (EC-Rope-TECS), aims to establish guidelines that cater to national needs.

According to an office memorandum, the Director General of Road Development & Special Secretary will lead this committee. It will include six other members. The memorandum highlights the importance of coordinating the growth of ropeway systems due to their expanding role in transportation and mobility.
Focus on Public Safety
The committee's primary focus is public safety. It will set technical standards, certification processes, and coordinate with state and Union Territory governments. This structure is crucial for ensuring safe operations across the country.
In addition to setting standards, EC-Rope-TECS will handle commissioning requirements, safety protocols, and regular audits. It will also conduct technical investigations if any incidents occur that could impact public safety during construction, operation, or maintenance of ropeway systems.
Role of Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety
The memorandum designates the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) as the ex-officio Commissioner of Ropeways Systems Safety (CRSS). This role involves conducting safety audits for ropeways established by or in partnership with the Central Government or any Central Public Sector Enterprise.
This initiative reflects the ministry's commitment to enhancing transportation infrastructure while prioritising safety. By establishing these standards and systems, the ministry aims to ensure that ropeway systems are reliable and secure for public use.
Overall, this development is a proactive measure to address the growing demand for ropeway transportation. It ensures that as this sector expands, it does so with a strong emphasis on safety and technical excellence.
