Uber has unveiled several new features to enhance the experience for its drivers, focusing on safety, convenience, and fairness. These updates include SOS integration, a helmet selfie feature, and a preference option for female drivers to accept only female riders. The company is also promoting registrations on the e-Shram portal to support gig workers under the government's Code on Social Security.

To encourage driver participation in the e-Shram portal, Uber is offering cash incentives to the first 10,000 drivers who register. This initiative aims to provide a safety net for gig workers by creating a unified database for them. The new features are designed to make driving safer and more convenient for over a million drivers using Uber's platform.
Driver Safety and Convenience Features
The helmet selfie feature requires two-wheeler drivers to take a selfie with their helmet before starting a trip. This ensures they are protected while driving. Using real-time verification technology, this feature prevents logging in without a helmet. Uber plans to roll out this feature nationwide early next year.
Female drivers can now choose to accept only female riders, which is particularly useful during late hours. This optional feature has already facilitated over 21,000 trips. It helps female drivers prioritise their safety and potentially increase their earnings by driving longer hours.
Enhanced Earnings and Support
Uber has introduced upfront tipping, allowing riders facing delays to add a tip before the trip begins. This incentivises drivers to accept ride requests promptly, benefiting both riders and drivers by increasing ride acceptance rates and boosting earnings.
The company has updated its payment technology to enable instant cash-outs of earnings. Drivers can access their digital earnings within five seconds, with up to four cash-outs daily. This surpasses the industry standard of up to three times a week, giving drivers more control over their finances.
Mentorship and Review Processes
A mentorship programme pairs new drivers with experienced mentors who have completed over 7,000 trips and hold a high rating. These mentors provide guidance in local languages on app usage and market understanding. Mentors receive compensation for their support, helping newcomers adapt to the platform.
The Deactivation Review Center allows drivers to view actions taken on their profiles and appeal decisions with evidence. Uber carefully reviews each appeal, reinstating over 5,000 drivers following legitimate appeals so far.
Prabhjeet Singh, President of Uber India and South Asia, stated that these updates empower drivers by enhancing safety and transparency in their daily operations. The audio recording feature lets drivers record audio if they feel unsafe during a trip. These recordings are encrypted and comply with India's one-party consent law.
