UltraTech Cement has announced a pioneering move in the cement industry by utilising National Waterway 1 for large-scale gypsum transport. This initiative aims to promote sustainable and cost-efficient logistics. The pilot shipment, carrying mineral gypsum, was launched by Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal at GR Jetty in Kolkata. It is being transported from Haldia Port in West Bengal to the Gaighat terminal in Patna, Bihar.

The company will benefit from the government's 'Jalvahak' scheme, which supports waterway cargo transport. This scheme offers up to 35% reimbursement on operating costs for goods transported over 300 km via inland waterways. This incentive enhances the economic feasibility of using waterways for logistics. The gypsum is destined for UltraTech's Pataliputra Cement Works in Patna district.
Commitment to Green Logistics
UltraTech's Managing Director, K C Jhanwar, highlighted the company's dedication to eco-friendly logistics as part of their Net Zero goal by 2050. "This initiative underscores our commitment to green logistics as an enabler of our Net Zero goal by 2050," he stated. The company had previously demonstrated its commitment to sustainable practices in April 2023.
Earlier this year, UltraTech transported 57,000 metric tonnes of phosphogypsum via inland and coastal waterways. This shipment travelled from Paradeep Port in Odisha to its Gujarat Cement Works in Amreli, Gujarat. Such initiatives reflect UltraTech's ongoing efforts to integrate sustainability into its supply chain operations.
By leveraging waterway transport, UltraTech not only reduces its carbon footprint but also optimises logistics costs. The use of waterways aligns with global trends towards more sustainable and efficient transportation methods. This approach is expected to set a precedent for other companies in the cement sector and beyond.
The strategic use of National Waterway 1 marks a significant step towards achieving UltraTech's environmental goals. It also showcases the potential of India's waterways as a viable alternative for bulk cargo transport. As industries seek greener solutions, such initiatives are likely to gain momentum, contributing to broader environmental objectives.
UltraTech's efforts highlight the importance of innovative logistics solutions in reducing environmental impact. By adopting waterway transport, the company is paving the way for more sustainable practices within the industry. This move not only benefits UltraTech but also supports national goals for cleaner and more efficient transportation systems.
