UPI Payments on ChatGPT? Razorpay, NPCI, OpenAI Join Hands for Chat-to-Checkout Feature, Now Live on Bigbasket

UPI Payments on ChatGPT Soon! The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), Razorpay, and OpenAI have joined hands to bring the feature of making online payments on ChatGPT.

The NPCI, in collaboration with OpenAI, has launched a pilot project to test AI-driven payments on ChatGPT, as reported by Reuters on Thursday, October 9. The pilot project would let users to make purchases using UPI payments via ChatGPT.

The initiative follows similar AI payment services launched by companies like Google's Alphabet and Perplexity AI earlier this year. As per the report, the pilot project will explore the potential of expanding the AI-led UPI payment services across various sectors.

It will assess how UPI can empower AI agents with payment credentials to autonomously complete transactions securely and under user control. This is part of a broader effort to transform AI assistants into comprehensive shopping agents.

The development is an effort to bring 'agentic AI' payments feature in the country. Earlier, top AI firms like Alphabet's Google, Perplexity AI, etc have launched their versions of AI-enabled payment services.

What is Agentic AI?

Agentic AI is a chatbot that assists users in completing transactions without letting them to leave the AI platform. It is also growing popular among e-commerce firms where they are using the feature to enhance user experience on the platform.
Agentic AI refers to artificial intelligence models that require minimal human intervention to complete tasks.

"With agentic payments, we are transforming AI assistants from simple discovery tools into full-fledged shopping agents," Reuters quoted Harshil Mathur, CEO of Razorpay.

What Next After Open AI Pilot Project?

The pilot project in the domain will pave way to evaluate how the online payment services can be expanded across verticals. It will also help the stakeholders in figuring out how UPI can be used to enable AI agents with payment credentials "to autonomously complete transactions on behalf of users in a safe, secure, and user-controlled manner," Reuters quoted a statement released by companies on Thursday.

BigBasket First Platform To Enable UPI Payments Via ChatGPT

Bigbasket will be among the first platforms to enable customers to shop through ChatGPT under the pilot project. Axis Bank and Airtel Payments Bank are the banking partners for this pilot. UPI processes over 20 billion transactions monthly, making it India's leading fast payments network.

Can You Place Order On Bigbasket, other Platforms Via ChatGPT Now?

The feature to make payments via ChatGPT is in early stage. As the pilot project has been launched recently, the feature is available to selected users, and platforms. So far there is no clarification about how can one book orders using Bigbasket and other selected platforms and make payments via ChatGPT.

Collaboration with OpenAI

Oliver Jay, managing director of international strategy at OpenAI, expressed enthusiasm about working with NPCI. He said they are exploring how advanced AI can be combined with UPI, one of the world's most trusted real-time payment networks. This partnership highlights the potential of integrating cutting-edge technology with established financial systems. Apart from the pilot project, Cashfree, has also launched its agentic AI payments solution for merchants.
