The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has initiated an investigation into products from leading Indian spice manufacturers, MDH and Everest, following allegations of contamination. This action comes in the wake of Hong Kong's decision to halt sales of certain products from these companies due to concerns over high levels of a cancer-causing pesticide.
An FDA representative told Reuters that the agency is gathering information on the matter. Three MDH spice mixes and one Everest spice mix for fish curries were among the items suspended for sale in Hong Kong.

Additionally, Singapore has ordered a recall of the Everest spice mix after it was found to contain elevated levels of ethylene oxide, a substance deemed unfit for human consumption and linked to long-term health risks, including cancer.
Both MDH and Everest are prominent names in the spice industry, not only in India but also in markets across Europe, Asia, and North America. Everest has previously affirmed the safety of its products, while MDH has yet to respond to inquiries regarding its products' safety.
Responding to inquiries from GoodReturns Media, a spokesperson for Everest clarified that recent reports of bans in Singapore and Hong Kong are unfounded. They stated that Singapore's food safety authority merely requested the temporary recall of one product for additional inspection, following a recall alert issued in Hong Kong-a standard protocol aimed at ensuring consumer safety.
India's Food Safety and Standards Authority (FSSAI) is also taking action in response to the international developments. The agency is conducting quality checks on products from MDH and Everest and collaborating with the companies to investigate the root cause of the quality issues. Inspections have commenced at their respective manufacturing facilities.
This is not the first time MDH has faced scrutiny over product safety. In 2019, certain batches of MDH products were recalled in the US due to salmonella contamination, highlighting the importance of stringent quality control measures in the food industry.
Meanwhile, India's Spices Board, responsible for regulating spice exports, has intervened by seeking data on MDH and Everest exports from authorities in Hong Kong and Singapore. The Board is actively working with the companies to address quality concerns and uphold the reputation of Indian spice exports.
The recent developments underscore the global nature of food safety challenges and the need for coordinated efforts among regulatory authorities and industry stakeholders to ensure the integrity of food supply chains. As the investigation unfolds, consumers are advised to stay informed and exercise caution when purchasing spice products, prioritising brands with established quality assurance measures.
The US FDA's review of Indian spice products from MDH and Everest reflects growing concerns over food safety and underscores the importance of international cooperation in addressing such issues. As authorities continue to investigate, stakeholders are urged to prioritise consumer safety and uphold the highest standards of quality in the food industry.
