A sudden cloudburst in Uttarkashi's Dharali village on August 5, 2025, turned tragic as heavy rains triggered massive flash floods and landslides which washed away homes, roads, and lives within seconds. The natural disaster has shocked Uttarakhand and left several families in pain and uncertainty. The India Meteorological Department had already issued a red alert for Uttarkashi and surrounding areas, warning of heavy rain with hailstorms along with landslide risks.

What Happened?
The cloudburst struck early in the morning, dumping an intense volume of water over Dharali village in Uttarkashi district, near the Kheer Ganga rivulet. The powerful flow of water and debris destroyed local markets, homes, and infrastructure, leaving behind a trail of destruction. Videos and local reports show how strong the floodwaters were, with entire structures being swept away within minutes.
Casualties
So far, at least 4 people have died, and over 50 people, including residents and tourists, are still missing. Many were staying in the area due to the ongoing pilgrimage season. The disaster also affected connectivity to the sacred Gangotri Dham, making rescue efforts more difficult.
Among those missing are several labourers working on road and construction projects in the area. Landslides triggered by the rains worsened the situation, making it harder for emergency teams to reach certain locations.
Rescue Operations Underway
Teams from the SDRF, NDRF, local police, Indian Army, and ITBP quickly jumped into action. At least 15 people were rescued in the first few hours. However, poor weather and blocked roads slowed down rescue and relief operations.
The Uttarakhand Chief Minister and other officials have assured that all possible help is being extended. Relief materials are being air-dropped to inaccessible areas, and medical help is on standby.
Why Uttarkashi Is Prone to Cloudbursts?
Uttarkashi is a hilly district with a fragile ecosystem, making it vulnerable to cloudbursts, especially during the monsoon season. These events involve sudden and extremely heavy rainfall over a small area in a short time. Because the rain comes down so fast, it doesn't soak into the soil; instead, it rushes down slopes, causing flash floods and landslides.
The IMD (India Meteorological Department) had already issued a red alert for Uttarkashi and surrounding areas, warning of heavy rain, hailstorms, and landslide risks.
This isn't an isolated incident. Uttarakhand has seen an increase in extreme weather events over the last few years, from floods to forest fires to glacier bursts. Experts believe this could be linked to climate change, shifting monsoon patterns, and disruptions in western disturbances.
The Char Dham Yatra, a major religious pilgrimage in the region, has been impacted repeatedly due to road washouts and safety concerns caused by such weather events.
