Vineet Nayyar, a distinguished Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer who later emerged as a prominent figure in the IT industry, passed away on Thursday morning in the national capital at the age of 85. Nayyar's career was marked by significant leadership roles, including serving as the executive vice-chairman of Tech Mahindra and leading HCL Technologies. He also made his mark as the first chairman of the state-run Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL).

Anand Mahindra, the chairman of Mahindra Group, took to the microblogging site X to announce Nayyar's demise, highlighting his pivotal role in the bold acquisition of Satyam. "I will personally be most grateful to him for his vision in exhorting us to establish Mahindra University, on the campus of the erstwhile Satyam Computer. He provoked us to create what will perhaps be one of the most important legacies of our Group," Mahindra stated.
Tech Mahindra's long-time chief executive C.P. Gurnani described Nayyar as a friend, philosopher, brother, guide, and a statesman par excellence. He lauded Nayyar for his instrumental role in turning around Satyam-Tech Mahindra. Mohit Joshi, the company's current chief executive, remembered Nayyar as an institution builder and a renaissance man with a profound love for literature and fine arts.
Nayyar's last significant assignment involved aiding in the turnaround efforts of the debt-laden Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services (IL&FS) as the executive vice-chairman for nearly 18 months until October 2020. His strategic vision, vast experience, and innovative approach played a crucial role in shaping the resolution process at IL&FS, according to a company statement.
Amitabh Kant, a career bureaucrat-turned-G20 sherpa, termed Nayyar's death as tragic and remarked that a generation of civil servants who have left a significant imprint on society is coming to an end. He emphasized that there is much to learn from them.
Nayyar's contributions to both the public sector and the IT industry have been widely recognized. His leadership at Tech Mahindra and HCL Technologies not only steered these companies through challenging times but also positioned them as leaders in their respective fields. His efforts in reviving Satyam Computer Services and his strategic involvement in IL&FS's resolution process are testament to his exceptional problem-solving skills and visionary approach.
The legacy of Vineet Nayyar will continue to inspire future generations of leaders in both public administration and the corporate world. His remarkable journey from an IAS officer to an IT industry leader exemplifies how versatile talent can transcend sectors and create lasting impacts.
