Flights from Europe to India have been affected due to rising tensions in West Asia, with Air India keeping a close watch on the situation. Lufthansa, a German airline, cancelled flights from Hyderabad and Mumbai to Frankfurt on Wednesday, following earlier cancellations from Frankfurt to these Indian cities. Passengers have been rerouted or accommodated, according to Jeffrey James, Head of Lufthansa Group Communications - Asia Pacific.

Lufthansa operates approximately 65 weekly flights between Europe and India. Meanwhile, Air India and Vistara have already stopped using Iranian airspace. An Air India official stated that the airline evaluates all flights daily for potential security risks, making necessary adjustments to avoid risky areas while minimising impact on operations. Flights to Tel Aviv have been suspended until further notice.
Airlines Adjust Routes Amid Tensions
Air India serves 44 international destinations, including several European cities. Vistara offers direct flights to Paris, Frankfurt, and London. Some European airlines have altered their routes to India. LOT Polish Airlines' flight from Warsaw to Delhi avoided Iranian airspace on Wednesday, although it had used it on September 30, as per Flightradar24 data.
Lufthansa's Jeffrey James confirmed that their flights would continue avoiding Israeli airspace until October 31. The tensions between Israel and Iran have heightened, prompting India to urge all parties to exercise restraint and prevent the conflict from expanding regionally.
Safety Bulletins Issued
The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) issued a Conflict Zone Information Bulletin on Wednesday. It advised operators against flying through Iranian airspace at any altitude. This decision followed consultations with the EU after Iran's attack on Israel on October 1 and Israel's subsequent announcement of retaliation plans.
EASA stated it would closely monitor the situation to evaluate any changes in risk levels for EU aircraft operators due to evolving threats. The agency aims to ensure safety by assessing whether risks increase or decrease over time.
As tensions persist in West Asia, airlines are taking precautionary measures to ensure passenger safety while maintaining operations as smoothly as possible. The situation remains dynamic, with airlines adjusting routes and schedules in response to ongoing developments.
