Hariyali Amavasya, also known as Sawan Amavasya, is one of the most spiritually significant days in the Hindu calendar. Observed during the holy month of Sawan-considered especially auspicious for Lord Shiva devotees. This day is associated with powerful rituals like Pitru Tarpan and Navagraha Shanti. In 2025, there's growing curiosity among devotees and the general public regarding the exact date of observance and whether it is a public holiday.
When is Hariyali Amavasya in 2025? July 24 or July 25?
This year, Hariyali Amavasya will be observed on Wednesday, 24 July 2025, according to the Udaya Tithi (the Vedic tradition of observing a day based on sunrise). The Amavasya Tithi begins at 2:29 AM on 24 July and ends at 12:41 AM on 25 July. Hence, all religious observances and pujas related to Hariyali Amavasya should be performed on July 24.

Is There a Public Holiday on July 24?
While Hariyali Amavasya is not a nationwide public holiday, the state of Chhattisgarh has declared July 24 as a public holiday in observance of Hareli Tihar, a local festival that coincides with Hariyali Amavasya. All government schools and offices in Chhattisgarh will remain closed, allowing families to participate in both spiritual and cultural activities.
Hariyali Amavasya: Religious and Cultural Significance
Hariyali Amavasya marks a time of deep spiritual cleansing and ancestral reverence. Devotees perform Pitru Tarpan, a ritual to honor their ancestors, typically by a river or any water body, in hopes of freeing themselves from ancestral debts and curses. Alongside, Navagraha Shanti pujas are conducted to balance planetary energies and invite prosperity into one's home.
The lush greenery brought by the monsoon season during Sawan gives this Amavasya its name-"Hariyali," meaning greenery. Bathing in holy rivers or with water mixed with Ganga jal, offering flowers to Lord Shiva, and meditating post-bath are traditional practices believed to bring peace and spiritual merit.
July 24 Holiday: Hareli Tihar in Chhattisgarh
In Chhattisgarh, Hareli Tihar is a major agrarian festival celebrated on the same day. Farmers worship their tools, cattle, and nature, seeking blessings for a successful harvest. The term "Hareli" is derived from "Haryali" (greenery), symbolising fertility, growth and prosperity. Cultural events, traditional games and folk performances are common during the celebration, and the festival holds immense significance in rural and urban areas alike.
Hariyali Amavasya falls on 24 July 2025, and if you are in Chhattisgarh, it is also a state holiday thanks to the celebration of Hareli Tihar. For the rest of India, while it may not be an official holiday, it remains a deeply spiritual occasion for religious observance, especially in the month dedicated to Lord Shiva.
