Bharatiya Janata Party leader, VV Rajesh, scripted history for the party as he sworn in as mayor of Thiruvananthapuram on Friday, December 26. Notably, this was a major win for BJP, months before a major election planned in the state.
The 45-year-old VV Rajesh is a BJP's state secretary and Kodunganoor ward councillor. With the recent victory, he became the party's first-ever mayor in Kerala. He termed the victory as a 'historic-moment' for the state. The saffron party was struggling for years to strengthen its presence in the state. As VV Rajesh's victory in comes as a major boost for the party ahead of state elections next year, here are all the details about him.

VV Rajesh Net Worth
The BJP leader has net asset worth Rs 1,02,27,708, ie Rs 1 crore, as per Myneta.com website by Association of Democratic Reforms (ADR). In Kerala Legislative Assembly election 2021, the leader had spent more than Rs 29 lakhs in the election campaign, as per the website.
Who Is BJP's VV Rajesh?
BJP leader VV Rajesh is the party's state secretary and Kodunganoor ward councillor. He is a lawyer by profession, who completed his higher education, (LLB) from Kerala University in 2000.
BJP's Performance in Mayoral Election
BJP secured nearly 50 of the 101 wards in the city in the municipal corporation polls. VV Rajesh had won 51 votes in the mayoral election on Friday, including the support of an independent councillor.
Rajesh Takes Oath As Mayor
Rajesh took oath as Mayor on Friday afternoon in a ceremony attended by Suresh Gopi, now a union minister, and Kerala BJP chief Rajeev Chandrasekhar, a former union minister. Soon after being sworn in, Rajesh set out broad goals for the Corporation and the city's 101 wards.
He told reporters, "We will move forward together... taking everyone along. Development will be implemented in all 101 wards... Thiruvananthapuram will be transformed into a developed city." The remarks outlined a focus on inclusive planning and equal attention across divisions that cover the entire civic area.
The change in Thiruvananthapuram also ends decades of CPIM control over the Corporation. The Left party had steered the civic body for around 45 years, while the Lok Sabha seat covering the city has remained with the Congress, represented by Shashi Tharoor since 2009.
Rajesh's elevation is a rare high point for the BJP in Kerala, where the party has long faced organisational and electoral barriers. It has never led a state government, and has had only one MLA, O Rajagopal, who won Nemom in 2016, and one MP from Kerala, actor Suresh Gopi, who captured Thrissur in 2024.
