As the winter season begins, the travel and hospitality sector is witnessing a significant surge in bookings. Compared to previous years, demand is noticeably higher for both local escapes and overseas holidays. From the snow-dusted hill stations and beaches of India to popular European destinations like Switzerland, France and Austria, travellers are increasingly seeking experiences that blend leisure, adventure and comfort.
Winter Vacation or Travel Planning in December 2025: Strong Surge in Bookings Across Domestic and International Destinations
To understand what's shaping this winter's travel trends, Goodreturns reached out to industry experts and hospitality insiders for their insights on bookings, destination preferences and traveller behaviour in 2025.

"This year's winter season is shaping up very strongly for us, with demand tracking 10-15% higher than last year starting mid-December. We are seeing a mix of early planners as well as strong traction closer to Christmas and New Year weekends, especially on the extended weekends," said Aviral Gupta, CEO at Zo World and Zostel.
"Domestic travellers are driving the bulk of bookings this season. We are also seeing a steady rise in inbound international guests but domestic demand remains the dominant contributor," he added.
Popular Destinations To Visit This Winter From December 2025 To February 2026
For domestic travellers, North India remains the top choice. Hill stations such as Manali, Nainital, Dharamshala, Kalpa, Sangla and Srinagar are particularly popular, offering snow-filled landscapes and a cooler climate to escape urban pollution. Coastal and scenic towns such as Varkala and Mahabaleshwar are also witnessing rising interest.
Internationally, preferred destinations include Schengen countries like Switzerland, France and Austria, alongside Thailand, Japan and Sri Lanka.
"The highest demand is being seen across Schengen countries such as Switzerland, France, Austria, and the UK, as well as in Sri Lanka, Japan, and Thailand, alongside domestic hotspots including Udaipur, Varkala, Indore, and Mahabaleshwar," shared Piyali Chatterjee Konar, Executive Vice President, Head - Customer Experience at Hansa Research Group.
Budget vs Premium Hotels: Traveller Preferences Driving Strong Revenue This Winter
Budget properties remain popular with solo travelers, Gen Z tourists, and long-stay backpackers, while premium hotels are drawing families and working professionals seeking curated experiences.
"The winter surge is expected to boost local tourism economies, especially in tier-3 hill destinations where hospitality and adventure tourism are key livelihood sources. We anticipate a healthy revenue upswing for the industry, driven by rising room rates and higher occupancy," as per Zostel CEO.
Budget properties remain popular with solo travelers, Gen Z tourists, and long-stay backpackers, while premium hotels are drawing families and working professionals seeking curated experiences.
What are the Challenges Affecting Tourism and Hospitality Nowadays?
"At the same time, the industry faces challenges such as rising operational costs, staffing shortages, and logistical issues. To address these, hotels are hiring seasonal staff, streamlining supply chains, and leveraging technology to improve efficiency," said Piyali Chatterjee Konar.
How Hotels Leverage Tourism Boards and Travel Agencies to Increase Bookings
Hotels are partnering with travel agencies, airlines and local tourism boards to create bundled offers and improve last-mile connectivity. These collaborations make it easier for travellers to plan hassle-free trips and explore offbeat destinations.
