West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has raised concerns about the sale of counterfeit Darjeeling Tea. She stated that her government is developing a system to prevent any damage to its reputation. Darjeeling Tea, renowned globally for its unique flavour and aroma, holds a geographical indication (GI) tag. "Darjeeling Tea is the best in the world," she remarked.

Banerjee shared her delight at seeing Darjeeling Tea served in airport lounges during her international travels. However, she expressed disappointment over the sale of inferior tea being marketed as Darjeeling Tea. "I have decided to formulate a system so that people cannot get a chance to sell bad tea and harm the reputation of Darjeeling Tea," she added.
Development Initiatives in Northern West Bengal
At the 7th Saras Sale of Articles of Rural Artisans Society Mela in Darjeeling, Banerjee inaugurated several development projects. She highlighted that her government has invested Rs 1.64 lakh crore for the advancement of northern West Bengal. This investment aims to boost infrastructure and improve living standards in the region.
Banerjee criticised the BJP, accusing its leaders of making false promises during election visits to the Hills. She emphasised her government's commitment to promoting tourism, noting that 1,400 people in Darjeeling and Kalimpong received Rs 12.40 crore in incentives for establishing homestays.
Political Criticism and Educational Prospects
In a veiled reference to BJP MP Raju Bista, Banerjee alleged, "The person who has won here has got a huge amount of money." She claimed that residents struggle to reach him for assistance with healthcare, water supply, or local development issues. "We work 364 days and he works only one day," she asserted.
Banerjee expressed optimism about the third campus of Presidency University in Kurseong becoming operational soon. This development is expected to enhance educational opportunities and contribute to regional growth.
The Chief Minister concluded by expressing her desire for peace and prosperity in the Hills. Her administration remains focused on ensuring the welfare and progress of the region through various initiatives and projects.
