Paying credit card bills just got a whole lot easier for millions of users across India. In a move aimed at enhancing convenience, leading credit card providers such as HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, and Punjab National Bank (PNB) have integrated their systems with the Bharat Bill Payment Systems (BBPS). This development enables cardholders to make repayments via third-party apps.
This initiative follows the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) directive, which mandated that from July 1, all credit card payments should be processed through BBPS. Despite this directive, not all banks have enabled BBPS for credit card bill payments through third-party apps. As of now, 15 banks have activated bill payments on BBPS, including notable names like ICICI Bank, SBI Cards, Kotak Mahindra Bank, and IndusInd Bank.

The following is a list of banks live on BBPS as of July 15:
ICICI Bank Credit Card
AU Bank Credit Card
BoB Credit Card
Canara Bank Credit Card
Federal Bank Credit Card
HDFC Bank Credit Card
IDBI Bank Credit Card
IDFC Bank Credit Card
Indian Bank Credit Card
IndusInd Credit Card
Kotak Mahindra Bank Credit Card
Punjab National Bank Credit Card
Saraswat Co-Operative Bank Credit Card
SBI Card Credit Card
Union Bank of India Credit Card
BBPS, managed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), is an integrated bill payment system providing an online service for customers. It offers an interoperable platform for bill payment, ensuring certainty, reliability, and safety of transactions. With the Bharat BillPay system, users can initiate transactions through various channels including the Internet, Internet banking, mobile banking, mobile wallets, kiosks, ATMs, bank branches, agents, and business correspondents. The ubiquitous Bharat BillPay logo signifies a trusted gateway for seamless bill payments.
For credit card users, this integration translates to a more streamlined experience. Instead of navigating through multiple portals or dealing with cumbersome processes, they can now use their preferred third-party apps to make payments quickly and securely. The move is expected to reduce the friction in the bill payment process, fostering greater financial discipline and ease among cardholders.
The BBPS platform not only offers convenience but also ensures that transactions are secure and reliable. This is crucial in a time when digital payments are increasingly becoming the norm. By simplifying the payment process, BBPS is expected to encourage more users to adopt digital payments.
While the transition to BBPS is a positive step, it's important to note that not all of the 34 banks authorized to issue credit cards have implemented this system yet. As more banks come on board, the ecosystem will become even more robust.
