Speculation over a Dearness Allowance (DA) hike in 2026 has intensified, as central government employees and pensioners look forward to a possible increase ahead of Holi. The January-June 2026 DA revision holds particular importance, as it will mark the first DA adjustment after the conclusion of the 7th Pay Commission cycle.
Will DA Hike Be Announced Before Holi 2026?
At present, central government employees and pensioners are receiving DA at 58% of basic pay, a rate that came into effect after a 3% hike for the July-December 2025 period from October 1, 2025.

The next DA revision is due from January 1, 2026, and based on inflation data trends under the All India Consumer Price Index (AICPI), a 2% increase is widely expected. If approved, this would take the DA level to 60%. As per practice, the proposal will require Cabinet approval, which typically comes in March.
Despite rising expectations, historical patterns indicate that an announcement before Holi is uncertain. In most years, the DA hike for the January-June cycle has been approved after Holi, particularly when the festival falls in the first half of March. With Holi 2026 also scheduled early in March, the probability of a pre-festival decision appears limited.
DA Hike in Holi 2026? Check What the Last Five Years' Trend Shows
However, a closer look at past trends suggests that a pre-Holi announcement may be less likely, especially given the timing of the festival in early March this year. A review of DA announcements over the past five years offers useful insight into the likely timing of the DA hike in 2026:
DA Hike 2025: The January-June DA hike of 2% was announced on March 28, after Holi on March 14.
DA Hike 2024: A notable exception, when a 4% DA hike was announced on March 7, well ahead of Holi on March 25.
DA Hike 2023: The DA hike decision came on March 24, after Holi on March 8.
DA Hike 2022: A 3% increase was approved on March 30, following Holi on March 18.
DA Hike 2021: DA remained frozen during the Covid period, though later in the year, the July-December hike was announced before Diwali.
From this pattern, it is clear that while Diwali-linked DA hikes (July-December cycle) are often announced ahead of the festival, Holi-linked expectations do not consistently hold true, especially when Holi falls early.
Why Festival Timing Influences DA Expectations
The belief that DA hikes are timed around major festivals stems from the government's twice-a-year revision cycle. Since the October-November DA hike often coincides with Diwali, employees naturally expect similar timing around Holi for the March decision.
However, recent experience suggests that early Holi dates reduce the likelihood of a festival-eve DA announcement. In such cases, Cabinet approval has tended to come later in March.
Likely Scenario for DA Hike 2026
Based on the five-year trend, a post-Holi announcement in late March 2026 appears more consistent with past practice. While the expected 2% hike remains likely, employees and pensioners may have to wait until after the festival for official confirmation.
