The Employment Provident Fund Scheme (EPF) is beneficial for employees to accumulate a sizeable corpus for retirement. EPF is managed by the Employees Provident Fund Organisation. EPF contribution is mandatory for employees as well as employers. Employees can check their EPFO balance in multiple ways and even access to EPF passbook with or without Universal Account Number (UAN).

Amount generated under EPF, with equal contribution from the employee and employer, can be withdrawn at the time of retirement. EPFO members can also make partial withdrawal on certain occasions.
What is EPFO's Employment Provident Fund Scheme?
The EPF scheme is a social security scheme mandatory for all salaried employees earning up to Rs 15,000 per month. For employers, a company that hires more than 20 employees, it is important for the entity to provide EPF contribution. The equal contribution by the employee and the employer also attracts interest and can be partially withdrawn.
What is a UAN?
Universal Account Number (UAN) is allotted by EPFO to an employee enrolled with the social security scheme. The 12-digit number acts as an umbrella for the multiple member IDs allotted to an individual by different establishments. Hence, while your member ID may change on switching jobs to a different organisation, your UAN ID will remain the same.
How To Get a UAN?
Employees can contact their employers to obtain their UAN id. Their UAN is readily available to the employer.
How To Check PF Balance?
There are multiple methods to check PF balance, ie by giving a missed call, sending SMS or on the mobile application. The simplest way is to check the EPF balance by visiting the EPFO portal at https://www.epfindia.gov.in.
How To Check Balance On PF Passbook With UAN?
-Go to the official website of EPFO, and search for the section 'For Employees' under 'Our Services'.
-Once you select that section, choose the option of 'Member passbook'.
-Enter UAN ID and password, and other details.
-Check your PF passbook, your account balance and other contributions.
Apart from EPFO portal, people can also check their PF passbook and account balance on Umang application.
How To Check PF Balance Without UAN?
To check PF balance without UAN, users can give a missed call on this number:
7738299899.
To check EPF balance via SMS, EPF members are required to send text message in the format of "EPFOHO UAN ENG" to 7738299899 from your registered mobile number. You will receive a message with your latest PF balance.
Once you get a response on you text message, you can revert with option 'ENG' or 'HIN' to change your preferred language as English or Hindi.
