Subscribers of the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) are set to get significantly faster and more convenient access to their retirement savings, with plans underway to allow direct EPF withdrawals into bank accounts through the Unified Payment Interface (UPI).
New EPFO Updates: EPFO to Launch UPI-Based EPF Withdrawal App in April
EPFO is reportedly preparing to launch a newly designed mobile application in April this year that will enable members to withdraw eligible provident fund amounts instantly using UPI. The proposed PF withdrawal facility is aimed at simplifying and speeding up the withdrawal process, reducing dependence on traditional claim filings and lengthy settlement timelines.

Once implemented, members will be able to transfer funds directly from their EPF accounts to their linked bank accounts by authenticating transactions through a UPI PIN, much like any other digital payment.
Under the new system, the labour ministry is developing a framework where a defined portion of a member's EPF balance will remain blocked as a safety buffer, while the remaining amount will be freely withdrawable.
This structure is intended to protect long-term retirement savings while still allowing members quick access to funds during emergencies or financial needs. The freely withdrawable balance will be clearly displayed on the app, giving subscribers real-time visibility of how much they can transfer.
New EPFO Mobile App to Offer EPF Passbook, Balance Check Along With UPI Withdrawals & More: Check All Expected Features
The upcoming EPFO mobile application will also offer other essential services. In addition to facilitating EPF withdrawals via UPI, members will be able to view their digital EPF passbook, check balances, and access basic account-related features. Importantly, existing platforms such as the Universal Account Number (UAN) portal and the UMANG app will continue to operate alongside the new application, ensuring continuity of services.
According to sources quoted by PTI, EPFO is currently testing the EPF UPI withdrawal feature using around 100 dummy accounts. These trials are focused on ensuring system stability, transaction security, and smooth performance before the public rollout.
At present, EPFO members cannot directly debit their provident fund accounts because the organisation does not hold a banking licence. As a result, all withdrawals must be routed through claim submissions and backend processing.
The new UPI-based system, however, is designed to make EPF access feel as seamless as regular banking services, even though EPFO itself is not a bank.
EPF Subscribers Can Now Access Up to Rs 5 Lakh Faster Under Auto-Settlement System
Currently, EPF subscribers must submit online claims to withdraw funds or take advances. Under the auto-settlement mechanism, eligible claims are processed electronically within three days, without manual intervention.
In recent years, EPFO has enhanced this facility by increasing the auto-settlement limit from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 5 lakh, enabling quicker access to funds for purposes such as medical treatment, education, marriage and housing.
