It is a medical condition/disease that existed before you obtained health insurance policy.
Pre-existing conditions/diseases are typically not covered for upto 2 years from policy inception date.
9. What happens if my policy is not renewed in time?
The policy will be renewable id the premium is paid within 15 days (called as Grace Period) of policy expiry date.
The policy will lapse if the premium is not paid within the grace period.
10. What is health insurance portability?
Policyholders are now allowed transfer of their health cover from one insurance company to another and from one plan to another, without losing out on the renewal credits for pre-existing conditions, enjoyed in the previous policy.

11. What happens to the Sum Insured in a health policy after a claim is made in a year?
After a claim is filed and settled, the Sum Insured is reduced by the amount of claim settled.
For example, In January, 2012 you start a policy with a Sum Insured of INR 5 Lakhs. Suppose you make a claim in July for INR 2 lakhs, and the claim is settled for INR 2 Lakhs.
The balance Sum Insured available to your family for the period August to December, 2012 will be INR 3 lakhs.
12. What is the maximum number of claims allowed over a year?
Any number of claims is allowed during the policy period unless there is a specific cap prescribed in any policy.
However the sum insured is the maximum limit under the policy.
13. What is "health check" facility?
Most health insurers pay for specified expenses towards general health check-up once in 4 years.
14. What do you mean by Family Floater Policy?
Family Floater Health policy is single policy that takes care of the hospitalization expenses of your entire family (self, spouse and children).
The policy has one single sum insured, which can be utilised by any/all insured persons in any proportion or amount subject to maximum of overall limit of the policy sum insured.
Family Floater plans are better than buying separate individual policies; the cover is for a minimum of 2 individuals.
