Sensex hits 60,000 points
Even as brokerage houses recommend stocks, it is important to remember that the Sensex has once again hit the 60,000 points mark.
"It is usually seen that when we don't enter a bear market, the reversal to previous highs is quick and almost one sided. And this seems to be happening again. I won't be surprised if we test a new all time high very soon. However, while new highs are definitely worth cheering, it is also a time for stock taking and exiting out of stocks that have run up a great deal or where fundamentals have taken a turn for the worse. To that extent, caution needs to be exercised, says," Rahul Shah, Co-Head of Research, Equitymaster.
Advisable to start booking profits partially
It is also advisable for investors to start booking profits partially. For example, if you are holding large chunks of a stock, it would be good to sell partially your holding in a particular stock and hold onto to the remaining portion. Should the markets hit new highs, it maybe a good time to exit at that stage.
Buy with a long-term perspective
Also, if you are buying, it would be advisable to keep in mind a 1-year holding period at the very least. Apart from this, there are stocks that have also fallen close to their 52-week lows and it would be a good idea to buy into some beaten down names and rejig your portfolio. Stocks that are export oriented have taken a big hit on worries and fears of a recession across the globe. We would therefore advise investors to be caution on such stocks, before buying into them.
Domestic theme may play out
It is advisable to buy stocks with a domestic theme that could play out. For example, at the moment, companies with an international exposure could face difficulties as investors fear recessionary worries. Therefore, it is advisable to look for domestic stock themes.
