All the taxpayers pay attention! The last date to file belated or revised income tax returns (ITR) for the assessment year 2025-26 is just six days away, and missing out on the ITR deadline can land you in trouble. As per the Income Tax Department, all the taxpayers who have received an alert for filing revised ITR are required to complete the task before 31 December.

What is a Revised/Belated ITR Return?

When a taxpayer discovers any error or wrong statement in filing the original Income Tax Return (ITR) submitted earlier. The same can be corrected by filing a revised return in the e-Filing portal. As per the IT department, the revised return can be filed at any time before the end of the relevant assessment year (AY) or before its completion.

How To File Revised/Belated ITR Online (For ITR-1 to ITR-4, ITR 7)?

-Visit the official website of the Income Tax e-filing portal, ie www.incometax.gov.in.
-Log in using e-Filing portal by entering user ID (PAN/Aadhaar). Enter the password and proceed to login.
-Click on the 'e-File' menu. Then click on 'Income Tax Return' link on e-File income tax return.
-Now you are required to enter details on the 'Income Tax Return Page'.
-Select 'Assessment Year', then select the mode of filing, ie Online.
-Select the status of the assessee.
-Select ITR form number 5.
-In the online ITR Form, ensure that the 'Personal Information' Tab, 'Filing section' will be prefilled as '139(5) Revised-return revised after filing original return'.
-The details of the "Receipt number" and 'Date of filing of the original return' will be pre-filled.
-Now enter the relevant details of the online ITR form and submit the ITR.
-Verify the returns for faster processing and quicker refunds.
-Now send the ITR-V through normal or speed post to "Centralised Processing Center, Income Tax Department, Bengaluru-560500"

How To File Revised ITR Offline?

-Visit the official Income Tax e-filing portal, ie www.incometax.gov.in.
-Download the ITR utility under 'Downloads-Income Tax Returns'.
-Now, extract the downloaded utility into a separate folder and open the utility from the extracted folder.
-Now open the utility from the extracted folder.
-Choose 'Filing Section' as '139(5) Revisedreturn revised after filing original return under 'Personal Information' tab.
-Now, enter the receipt of number and date of filing.
-Fill or correct the relevant details.
-Now, login to e-filing portal using your credentials.
-Click on 'Upload Return and Proceed to Verification'
-e-Verify the returns for faster processing and quicker refunds or Send the ITR-V through normal or speed post to "Centralized Processing Center, Income Tax Department, Bengaluru-560500".
