RBI's Cheque Clearance Deadline: The bank customers who constantly rely on bank cheques for big ticket transactions will have to wait longer to enjoy the single-day cheque clearance facility. The Reserve Bank of India, on Thursday, announced the extension of deadline for the implementation of the second phase of the faster cheque clearance system.
Earlier, the RBI had announced to implement the second phase of its faster cheque clearance CCS system till January 3, 2026. However, the deadline to implement faster cheque clearance has been extended till further notice, announced the RBI in its latest notice released on Tuesday.

RBI Extends Faster Cheque Clearance Deadline
The RBI has extended the deadline to implement the second phase of faster clearance of cheques. Hence, customers can continue to keep using the present Phase 1 process. The three-hour deadline for cheque decisions is on hold, and the central bank has not shared a new launch date.
RBI Extends Faster Cheque Clearance Deadline: What It Means For Customers?
The deadline extension means that the strict-time bound element of the RBI faster cheque clearance CCS system will not begin. Cheque payments will still move through the existing workflow, where banks have longer to respond. For customers, this keeps current clearance patterns in place, without the extra speed promised under Phase 2.
What is Cheque Truncation System Overhaul ?
The Cheque Truncation System (CTS) overhaul currently operates in batch processing. After the transition to new system, the system would let the scanning and processing of cheques on the same day during business hours. As per the RBI order, the new system will reduce the clearing cycle from T+1 days to just a few hours. The new rule mandates a single presentation session from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
Once the system is implemented, it will be mandatory for banks to clear the cheques within three hours of presentation by the customer. For example, if a customer has deposited a cheque at 10 am, then it must be confirmed by 2 pm. The cheque will be considered automatically approved if the bank fails to give any confirmation within the timeframe.
Phase 1 of the RBI faster cheque clearance CCS system started on October 4, 2025. It introduced a single continuous presentation window during the day. Branches scan cheques as they arrive and send images with MICR data to the clearing house in real time. The drawee bank then accepts or rejects the item electronically within the defined confirmation period.
