Cash withdrawals are one of the basic banking services we use every month. To maintain safety and promote digital transactions, banks operating in India have some limits on these withdrawals and impose charges on these activities.
Here are the cash withdrawal limits and charges on ATM transactions imposed by the three most popular banks in the country.
State Bank of India (SBI)
Withdrawal limit:
Daily cash withdrawal limit using SBI ATM cards were halved from Rs 40,000 to Rs 20,000 in October 2018.
The limit was reduced to protect customers against card skimming incidents and also promote digital transactions. However, some SBI cards allow daily cash withdrawals higher than Rs 20,000.
Number of transactions per month:
- Customers can make any number of transactions at an SBI ATM.
- At any other bank ATMs linked to the National Financial Switch (includes all popular public and private banks) 3 free transactions are allowed in 6 metro cities (Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad and Bengaluru) and 5 free transactions (financial and non-financial) in other locations in a calendar month.
- These free transactions are limited to savings bank account holders only.
- Platinum chip debit card: Rs 1 lakh
- Titanium Royale Debit Card: Rs 75,000
- EasyShop Debit Card: Rs 25,000
- RuPay Premium Debit Card: Rs 25,000
- EasyShop Titanium Debit Card: Rs 50,000
- Cash withdrawal: Rs. 20 plus taxes per transaction
- Non-Financial Transaction: Rs. 8.5 plus taxes per transaction ATMs of other banks:
- Debit Card PIN regeneration charge: Rs 50 (plus taxes as applicable)
- Decline charge for insufficient balance: Transactions declined at other bank ATMs anywhere in the world or at a merchant outlet outside India due to insufficient funds will be charged at Rs 25 per transaction (plus taxes as applicable).
HDFC Bank
Withdrawal limit:
The daily cash withdrawal limits for HDFC Bank customers various according to the type of card they use.
Number of transactions per month and charges beyond limit:
HDFC Bank ATMs:
Only first 5 withdrawals from an HDFC Bank ATM in a calendar month are free of charge.
Transactions over and above free limit will be charged as under:
At any other bank ATMs linked to the National Financial Switch (includes all popular public and private banks) 3 free transactions are allowed in 6 metro cities (Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad and Bengaluru) and 5 free transactions (financial and non-financial) in other locations in a calendar month.
Transactions over and above free limit will be charged as under:
Rs. 25 per balance enquiry and Rs. 125 per cash withdrawal (plus taxes as applicable)
The Bank will charge cross-currency mark-up of 3.5 percent on foreign currency transactions carried out on Debit Cards. The exchange rate used will be the VISA/Master Card wholesale exchange rate prevailing at the time of transaction
Other charges:
ICICI Bank
Withdrawal limit:
The daily cash withdrawal limit at ATMs for users of ICICI Bank cards are informed to the customers at the time of issue of the cards as these vary according to type of card and its features. It could range from Rs 50,000 to Rs 1.5 lakh.
ICICI Bank's website says that this limit is displayed at the respective ATM locations.
As for withdrawals at non-ICICI Bank ATMs, the withdrawal may be limited to Rs 10,000 per transaction.
Number of transactions per month and charges beyond limit:
ICICI Bank ATMs:
Only first 5 withdrawals from an ICICI Bank ATM in a calendar month are free of charge. Thereafter, the charges will be Rs 20 plus GST per financial transaction and Rs 8.50 plus GST per non financial transaction.
ATMs of other banks:
At any other bank ATMs linked to the National Financial Switch (includes all popular public and private banks) 3 free transactions are allowed in 6 metro cities (Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad and Bengaluru) and 5 free transactions (financial and non-financial) in other locations in a calendar month.
Thereafter, the charges will be Rs 20 plus GST per financial transaction and Rs 8.50 plus GST per non financial transaction.
