The Railway Budget 2016 has spared individuals from any passenger fare hike. There is also no freight hike, as was largely expected.
Following are the highlights of the Railway Budget 2016-17 presented by Railway Minister, Suresh Prabh.
Here are the highlights of the budget presented in the parliament:

- No increase in passenger fare.
- LIC agrees to fund Rs 1.5 lakh crores over next 5 years on favourable terms.
- All Stations to be made Disabled Friendly
- Two new locomotive factories will boost Make in India initiative.
- FY 2016-17 passenger revenue target seen at Rs 51,000 crores, up 12.4 per cent.
- More than 1 lakh telephone calls are being made everyday to seek inputs from passengers.
- Introduction of 30,000 Bio-Toilets in Trains by the Next Financial Year.
- Railways to provide 17000 Bio-Toilets in Trains under Swachh Rail Swachh Bharat Mission
- Introduction of WiFi services at 100 stations this year, 400 more stations over next two years.
- By 2020 95% of trains shall be running on time.
- Overnight double-decker trains will be introduced on the busiest roots.
- 3 elevated corridors to be made in Mumbai.
- Local cuisines of choice will be made available to the passengers.
- Work underway to introduce 20,000 screen rail display network for passing info to passengers.
- Multi-purpose stalls at station to provide milk and medicines.
- e-booking on concession passes for journalists to be introduced. Railways looking at monetizing assets. Measures to earn advertising revenue.
- Aastha circuit to connect pilgrim centres
- Launch of new service: Antyodaya Express: Unreserved, second class, superfast trains.
- Railways looking at e-commerce models for door-to-door delivery of goods.
- Railways plans to set aside Rs 50 crore for providing innovation grants to start-ups.
- To introduce National Rail Plan to harmonise network & set up a new R&D organisation.
- National Rail Plan in consultation with states & stake holders, to urbanize rail network with other modes of transport.
- Increased Quota of Lower Berth for Senior Citizens and Women
- Better Rail connectivity to North East & Jammu and Kashmir
