Like bank accounts if you do not use your Aadhaar for the purposes meant it too can become inactive after three consecutive years.
The 12-digit biometric identification number issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India or UIDAI has gained significant importance and is said to even score over Permanent Account Number or PAN in not so distant future. The Government of India has made the ID mandatory for several social security schemes, bank account opening, income tax return filing and transactions valued over Rs. 50,000.
Aadhaar's linking to each of the individual's account and financial transactions is also an attempt to curb illicit money practices in country.
When can the Unique Aadhaar Id become inactive
As with the bank accounts which are rendered inactive in case customers do not operate it, similarly if the unique Aadhaar ID is not put in use for three consecutive years, then there are likely higher chances that the Aadhaar number issued to you is no more active.
Uses of Aadhaar ID
1. Linking with Bank Account
2. Seeding with PAN
3. Providing ID for social schemes such as for availing NPS contribution by the government
4. Giving Aadhaar number to EPFO for pension claims etc.
UIDAI provides you to verify whether your Aadhaar number stands active or inactive
On the home page of UIDAI, under the tab Aadhaar services, there is a link 'Verify Aadhaar Number'. The link shall take you to another page that shall ask you to provide your Aadhaar details. Captcha and then you need to click on verify. If upon processing you see a green tick mark, then it Is reflective of the fact that your Aadhaar number is still functional.
