Aadhaar Deactivated by Mistake? UIDAI Launches Lifesaving Fix for ‘Dead’ Users: Check How to Reactivate Now!

To assist individuals whose Aadhaar numbers were wrongly deactivated, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has rolled out an official procedure for Aadhaar reactivation in cases where a person is mistakenly marked as deceased.

The updated protocol was outlined in a circular issued by UIDAI on July 7, 2025, aimed at rectifying identity deactivations that occur due to data mismatches or errors in death registration records.

Aadhaar Deactivation on Death: What UIDAI Says?

According to UIDAI, an Aadhaar number is deactivated upon confirmation of death through a match between Aadhaar data and records from death registering authorities.

"UIDAI deactivates the Aadhaar number of the deceased person based on validation and matching of death registration details with the database of the death registering authority and the Aadhaar database," the circular stated.

However, in cases where a living individual's Aadhaar is deactivated due to clerical or data errors, UIDAI now provides a streamlined reactivation process.

Who Can Apply for Aadhaar Reactivation?

Any Aadhaar holder whose number has been wrongly deactivated due to being mistakenly recorded as deceased is eligible to apply for reactivation.

Step-by-Step Aadhaar Reactivation Process

1. Submit a Request:
The affected Aadhaar holder must fill the prescribed application form (Annexure) and submit it to the nearest UIDAI Regional or State Office. Submissions can be made via post, email, or in person.

2. Biometric Re-verification:
After receiving the application, the concerned office will call the applicant to a designated Aadhaar center for biometric verification. This includes face, iris, and fingerprint scans, conducted under the supervision of UIDAI officials. The re-verification must be completed within two weeks of the application.

3. Status Update:
UIDAI will inform the applicant about the status of the application within 30 days of biometric submission. Updates will also be sent via SMS and can be checked on the myAadhaar portal.

Once verified, the Aadhaar number will be reactivated. UIDAI will notify the Registrar of Births and Deaths, the Registrar General of India, and the Aadhaar holder.
