To ensure all citizens have ample time to keep their identity information current, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has extended the deadline for updating Aadhaar card details free of charge. Aadhaar holders now have until September 14 to make necessary changes to their details on the UIDAI's myAadhaar online portal without incurring any fees.
This extension marks the fourth time the deadline has been pushed forward, reflecting the importance UIDAI places on accurate and up-to-date information. Initially, the free update period was set to end on December 15, 2023, but it was subsequently extended to March 14, June 14, and now September 14, 2024.

Online Process
To facilitate the update process, UIDAI has streamlined the steps required to make changes online. Here's a comprehensive guide on how to update your Aadhaar card details for free:
Log in to the myAadhaar Portal: Visit https://myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in and log in using your 16-digit Aadhaar number.
Enter Captcha and OTP: After entering the Captcha, click on 'Login using OTP'. Enter the OTP sent to your linked mobile number to access the portal.
Access the Portal: Upon successful OTP verification, you will be able to access the myAadhaar portal.
Select 'Document Update': Here, you will see your existing details. Choose 'Document Update' to proceed.
Upload Proof of Identity and Address: Select the appropriate Proof of Identity (POI) and Proof of Address (POA) documents and upload the required proofs.
Submit the Update Request: Once the necessary documents are uploaded, click on the 'submit' button.
Receive Update Request Number: After submission, a 14-digit Update Request Number (URN) will be generated. This URN can be used to track the status of your update request.
Free Online Updates vs. Offline Fees
While the online update process is free, those opting to update their Aadhaar details offline will incur a fee of Rs 50. The offline update can be done at any Aadhaar Seva Kendra or other designated centres. This nominal fee covers the administrative costs associated with processing the updates manually.
The Aadhaar card has become a vital document for residents of India, serving as a proof of identity and address for various purposes, including availing government subsidies, opening bank accounts, and even for KYC (Know Your Customer) requirements in financial transactions. With over 1.3 billion residents registered under the Aadhaar system, it is crucial for the details on these cards to be accurate and up-to-date.
Frequent changes in residence, name, or other personal details necessitate regular updates to ensure the information on the Aadhaar card remains current. The UIDAI's decision to extend the free update period aims to mitigate any inconvenience faced by residents in updating their information.
The UIDAI urges all Aadhaar holders to take advantage of this extended period to review and update their information. The seamless online process eliminates the need to visit an Aadhaar centre, thus saving time and effort. With the September 14 deadline approaching, residents are encouraged to promptly update their details to avoid any last-minute rush or technical glitches.
The repeated extensions of the deadline for free Aadhaar updates reflect UIDAI's efforts to ensure that every resident has the opportunity to keep their identification details accurate. This extension to September 14 provides a significant window for those who have not yet updated their information. By simplifying the online process and maintaining a fee waiver, UIDAI has made it easier than ever for residents to ensure their Aadhaar card details are current and correct.
