Google Pay has announced a new feature that allows users to activate Unified Payments Interface (UPI) services using Aadhaar, the country's unique identification system. This move aims to simplify the UPI activation process and make it more accessible to users.
With the integration of Aadhaar-based UPI activation, Google Pay users can now link their bank accounts and create UPI IDs directly through the app by using their Aadhaar number. This eliminates the need for manual entry of bank details and simplifies the onboarding process for new users.

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) reports that an overwhelming 99.99% of adults in India possess a unique Aadhaar number, showcasing the widespread adoption of this identification system.
In order to utilize this feature, individuals are required to ensure that their Aadhaar card contains the updated phone number associated with their bank account. Google emphasizes that it does not store Aadhaar numbers but serves solely as a facilitator in securely transmitting the Aadhaar number to the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) for validation purposes.
Here is a step-by-step guide on how to set up Google Pay using Aadhaar:
- When signing up for Google Pay, users will be able to choose between a debit card and an Aadhaar-based UPI. Customers must first give the first six digits of their Aadhaar number in order to use Aadhaar-based onboarding.
- Download and open the Google Pay app on your phone.
- Select "Add Account"
- Select the bank associated with your mobile number and then click Next.
- To verify both your cell number and your bank account, use the "Aadhaar" mode.
- Enter your Aadhaar number, which is linked to your bank account, in the first six digits.
- Make a 4- or 6-digit UPI PIN.
- For verification, the bank will issue an OTP to your registered mobile number.
- Set the UPI PIN and confirm it.
- Your bank account will now be successfully added using the Aadhaar number you provided.
