FASTags is a nationwide initiative rolled out to eliminate some of the impediments on the toll plazas and thus to extend seamless traffic movement. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, and National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) Fastag will be used for the collection of prescribed toll fee, using RFID technology. With the introduction of FASTag across national and state highways with effect from December 1, there shall be no longer cash collection at toll plazas.

So, if you travel by road frequently or not so frequently also, you now need to have FASTag with you. The same is available across 28,500 PoS terminals. These are also available online and individuals can purchase it from Amazon or different bank sites such as that of SBI, ICICI Bank, Axis bank, Paytm Payment Banks, HDFC bank, IDFC First bank, etc. (For a detailed list of member banks, please visit www.ihmcl.com).
How to buy FASTag from SBI online?
As per the SBI site fastag.onlinesbi.com, you need to approach any of the SBI PoS and with a valid KYC as well as vehicle RC together with original documents for verification, you can get either of the two FASTag accounts.
1. With limited KYC: The prepaid account cannot have more than Rs. 10000 at any given point of time and also the monthly reload limit is capped at Rs. 10000.
2. Full KYC account with a limit of up to Rs. 1,00,000 for their Fastag prepaid account. There is no monthly reload cap in this account.
Remember for getting your FASTag account created with the bank, you would also bring along your vehicle.
The SBI FASTag offers a guarantee of 3 year period. And for the use of such FASTags, while crossing national or state highways, you would have to take the dedicated lane marked for the same as these lanes only have RFID deployed on them for reading your cards. And in a case when you do not have the card and enter such a lane then as per the gazette notification, you will have to pay double the fees applicable for the same.
Also, there is an announcement that apart from the convenience fee, users of FASTag can avail a cashback of up to 2.5% transactions done on all National Highways Toll Plazas using FASTag in FY 2019-20. Additionally, there is other offer rolled out by banks of accidental insurance with these RFID enabled cards to on-duty drivers when driving the car.
