The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has released a new Secure QR Code that includes demographic information as well as a photograph of the Aadhaar card bearer. Previously, QR codes on Aadhaar print letters and e-Aadhaar were only used to verify and get demographic information. The information contained in the QR Code is safe since it has been digitally authenticated by UIDAI.

The official UIDAI smartphone app mAadhaar or Aadhaar QR Code scanner App can decode the Aadhaar QR Code found on Aadhaar Letter, e-Aadhaar, and m-Aadhaar. Both QR codes will now be included in all Aadhaar variants. The demographic information of residents will be contained in the QR code on the front side of e-Aadhaar, such as Name, Address, Date of Birth, Gender, and Masked Aadhaar Number, while the QR code on the backside of the e-Aadhaar will feature a photograph as well as all of the demographic details. According to UIDAI "Anyone, whether a Aadhaar Holder or an User/Service Agencies like Banks, AUAs, KUAs etc can use this facility for offline verification of the data in e-Aadhaar."
What is a secure QR code and how it can be scanned?
A secure QR code is a one-of-a-kind code that contains the Aadhaar holder's demographics and photograph and is digitally signed by UIDAI. The identification of the holder can be confirmed by scanning the Secure QR Code on the provided Aadhaar/ e-Aadhaar. An Aadhaar bearer can access information including Ref ID, Name, Gender, Date of Birth, Mobile number, Email, Address, Photograph, and a 2048 bit digital signature by scanning the secure QR code.
If an individual has an outdated copy of his or her Aadhaar card and wants to utilise offline verification, then he/ she can use e-Aadhaar/ m-Aadhaar or go to the UIDAI portal to verify his/ her demographic details. Aadhaar QR Code scanner app or mAadhaar app can be used to scan the secure code. Both Android and iOS handsets are compatible with the apps. Following the installation of the app, secure Aadhaar/e-Aadhaar/m-Aadhaar QR codes must be scanned and once the QR Code of e-Aadhaar is digitally validated by UIDAI the application will display the demography including photograph records of the citizen.
