According to the Income Tax Act of 1961, income tax is a type of direct tax levied by the Government of India on any income (other than that generated from agriculture and related activities). It applies to taxable income earned by individuals, members of a Hindu Undivided Family, firms, companies, Limited Liability Partnerships, local governments, and any artificial juridical person. If you are a salaried employee, your employer has most likely deducted the taxes you must pay from your pay (via TDS). However, if you are self-employed or have income other than salary (for example, rental income), the taxes deducted at source (TDS) may not be sufficient to cover your income tax payment. Here's how to pay your taxes both online and in person.

How to pay tax online?
Step-1
To pay taxes online, go to https://www.protean-tinpan.com/ click on Services and then e-payment: Pay Taxes Online tab.
Step-2
Choose the appropriate challan, i.e. ITNS 280, ITNS 281, ITNS 282, ITNS 283, ITNS 284 or Form 26 QB (only for TDS on property sale) as applicable.
Step-3
Enter the PAN / TAN (as applicable) and other mandatory challan details such as the accounting head under which payment is made, the tax payer's address, and the bank details etc.
Step-4
When you submit your data, a confirmation screen will appear. If the PAN / TAN is valid according to the ITD PAN / TAN master, the full name is displayed.
Step-5
Following confirmation of the data entered, the taxpayer will be directed to the bank's net-banking site.
Step-6
The taxpayer must log in to the net-banking site using the user id and password provided by the bank for net-banking purposes and enter payment information on the bank's website.
Step-7
After a successful payment, a challan counterfoil with the CIN, payment details, and bank name from which the e-payment was made will be displayed. This counterfoil serves as proof of
Offline method
If you are unable to pay your taxes online, you can do so by visiting your local bank branch. To make an offline payment, follow the steps below.
1. Visit a bank branch and request the appropriate tax payment challan form, which in this case is Challan 280.
2. Fill out the form with the necessary information. The offline form is identical to the one displayed on the online platform, namely the TIN-NSDL website. The information requested in the form is also the same.
3. Go to the appropriate bank's counter and hand in the completed Challan 280 form along with the money. You can pay your taxes in cash or by check. However, because the bank may be hesitant to accept large cash payments, paying by check is preferable. It is also easier to track and keep track of your payments. If you prefer to pay by check, make it payable to the "Income Tax Department."
4. A bank official will take your money and challan and issue you a receipt by tearing off a portion of the challan, filling in payment details, and stamping it.
Once you've paid your tax, whether online or in person, keep the receipts as proof of payment. It can take up to 10 days for your income tax payment to appear on your Form 26AS as 'Advance tax' or 'Self assessment tax', depending on the type of tax paid.
