IRCTC Booking Alert: In a major update related to railway ticket bookings, people won't be able to book Tatkal tickets online via IRCTC application without Aadhaar authentication (also called verification) from July 1. It is important for IRCTC application users to authenticate their Aadhaar before deadline to not miss on their Tatkal bookings.
Union Railway Minister Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, while announcing the new IRCTC Tatkal booking rules on June 17, said that the new rules will come into effect from July onwards and only Aadhaar-authenticated KYC-verified users would be able to book Tatkal tickets during the first 30 minutes of the booking window.

"As per the new rule, only Aadhaar-authenticated and KYC-verified users will be allowed to book Tatkal tickets during the first 30 minutes of the booking window. This measure will help ensure tickets are available to genuine passengers," he said.
How To Authenticate Aadhaar via IRCTC?
People can authenticate their Aadhaar with their IRCTC id on the IRCTC application or via visiting the official website of IRCTC.
How To Authenticate IRCTC User ID With Aadhaar?
-Open www.irctc.co.in in your web browser
-Submit your login credentials and proceed for Sign In.
-Go to MY ACCOUNT tab and select Authenticate User.
-Authenticate User page will appear where user's profile details will be populated.
-Submit your Aadhaar Number or Virtual ID and click on "Verify details and receive OTP" button.
-Submit OTP received on mobile number linked with submitted Aadhaar.
-Read and select the consent checkbox and then click on Submit button to authenticate the details with Aadhaar.
-On successful authentication, confirmation message will be displayed.
-In case of unsuccessful authentication, alert message will be displayed. In such cases, users are requested to re-check the details submitted and try again.
-Authentication status can be checked on selecting the Authenticate User link under MY ACCOUNT tab on top navigation of IRCTC eTicketing website.
How To Link Aadhaar Number With IRCTC Account?
You can also link Aadhaar with IRCTC account by following the below mentioned steps.
-Go to the official site of the IRCTC portal.
-Enter your login details.
-Search for the 'Link Aadhaar' option and click on it.
-Enter your name and other information.
-Check the Box and click on 'Send OTP'
-Enter the OTP and fulfil the KYC details from Aadhaar card.
-Select the option to 'Update'
-Your Aadhaar verification process is complete.
The new development is likely to benefit lakhs of IRCTC users who end up in waiting list while booking Tatkal tickets because of the involvement of agents. In addition to Aadhaar authentication, people can increase their chances of IRCTC Tatkal booking by saving the details of the passengers in advance. Saving passengers details in advance let users to reduce the time of filing details of the passengers and save time while booking tatkal tickets on IRCTC.
The Indian Railways recently set a record by booking around 31,814 tickets in just one minute. Amid rising online railway ticket bookings, daily user logins have also jumped significantly by more than 20% in financial year 2024-25. There has been a sharp surge in daily ticket bookings as well, with e-tickets making up the giant share of overall railway ticket bookings.
