The first phase of polling for the Lok Sabha elections 2024 commenced on April 19. Across 102 parliamentary constituencies sprawled over 21 states and Union Territories, citizens queued up early, ready to exercise their rights. Simultaneously, the electoral buzz reverberated in the northeastern states of Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim, where assembly elections coincided with the Lok Sabha polls.
Arunachal Pradesh, with its two Lok Sabha seats and a 60-member Assembly, witnessed the electorate streaming in to cast their ballots. Similarly, in Sikkim, voters turned out to decide on 32 assembly seats and a solitary Lok Sabha seat.

However, recognizing the hiccups of the electoral process, the Election Commission proactively addressed concerns regarding misplaced voter ID cards. A timely notification unveiled alternative identification documents that citizens could wield to exercise their voting rights, ensuring that no eligible voter would be disenfranchised due to administrative lapses.
Alternative IDs for Voting in Lok Sabha Elections 2024
Aadhaar Card: For citizens unable to locate their voter ID cards, the Aadhaar card emerged as a viable alternative, facilitating seamless voting at the poll booths.
Passbooks: In a nod to practicality, voters were empowered to utilize their passbooks as a valid document for casting their votes.
MNREGA Job Card: Those enrolled in the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA) found their job cards doubling up as instruments of participation in the electoral process.
Health Insurance Smart Card: Under the auspices of the Ministry of Labour, health insurance smart cards were recognized as a proof of identity.
Driving License: Leveraging existing identification infrastructure, driving licenses were embraced as an alternative document for voters.
PAN Card: The Permanent Account Number (PAN) card emerged as another alternative for voters grappling with missing voter ID cards.
Smart Card issued by RGI under NPR: The Smart Card issued by the Registrar General of India (RGI) under the National Population Register (NPR) provided an alternative for voters.
Service Identity Cards: Employees of Central or State Government, Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs), or Public Limited Companies found solace in their service identity cards.
Official Identity Cards for Legislators: Members of Parliament (MPs), Members of Legislative Assemblies (MLAs), and Members of Legislative Councils (MLCs) wielded their official identity cards as tokens.
Unique Disability ID (UDID) Card: The Unique Disability ID (UDID) Card issued by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment emerged as a conduit for inclusive electoral participation.
The unveiling of these alternative identification options underscores the Election Commission's dedication to upholding the democratic ethos of the nation, ensuring that every eligible citizen's voice resonates in the hallowed halls of governance.
