Australia is a popular destination for overseas students because of its outstanding education system, multicultural society, and employment opportunities. For July intake students, preparation of their post-study work is important. The Temporary Graduate Visa (subclass 485) allows graduates to remain in Australia after they have completed their studies to gain much-needed work experience. Based on an interview with Ms. Mamta Jani, Founder - OnTrack Education, below are the post-study work visa options for July intake students in Australia.

Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485) Streams
It has two main streams: The Post-Higher Education Work and The Graduate Work Stream. The Post-Higher Education Work Stream is meant for students who obtained a bachelor's, master's, or doctoral degree at an Australian Institute. The time for which the student is allowed to work in Australia after his qualification is 2 years after completing the bachelor's degree, 2-3 years after completing the master's degree, and 4 years after the completion of the doctorate degree. Those who graduated from regional areas of Australia may also get an additional work right of 1-2 years.
The Graduate Work Stream is available for students whose qualifications are on Australia's Skilled Occupation List. This stream provides 18 months of work rights, with potential extensions for high-demand skills.
Eligibility Criteria
To submit an application for the Temporary Graduate Visa, it is necessary for students to complete a course with a CRICOS registration, which runs for a minimum of 92 weeks. They must also satisfy the English language requirement and submit health and police clearance, plus deal with sufficient health coverage.
Recent Policy Changes and Extensions
Starting on 1 July 2023, graduates from in-demand occupations such as healthcare, engineering, and technology will receive an additional two years of post-study work rights. Regional university graduates will also benefit from extended visa durations, assisting them to gain work experience and establish their life in Australia.
Benefits of Post-Study Work in Australia
Australia's post-study work allows international graduates to obtain international work experience, which can help enhance their employability. Numerous individuals leverage the chance as a stepping stone for permanent residency in the General Skilled Migration stream. The strong economy, good salaries, and great work-life balance found in Australia make it an attractive destination for young workers.
For international students moving to Australia with a July start term, the Temporary Graduate Visa (subclass 485) provides a strong transition option. Understanding the different visa streams, eligibility requirements, and current policy updates will help the students plan their future appropriately. It is significant that students remain informed. Students can remain informed by visiting the Australian Department of Home Affairs's official website or by obtaining advice from a registered migration agent.
