UIDAI Deactivates 1.2 Crore Aadhaar of Deceased: How To Report Death Of Family Member on MyAadhaar Portal?

In a bid to prevent the misuse of the 12-digit identity proof document, Aadhaar, the Unique Identity Authority of India has deactivated nearly 1.2 crore Aadhaar cards of deceased persons. The Aadhaar card numbers and IDs have been deleted after accessing the records of nearly 1.6 crore deceased people from the Civil Registration System (CRS) of 24 states and UTs through the Registrar General of India.

The Aaadhaar deactivation was carried out after complete verification and validation of the targeted numbers. "Following thorough validation, approximately 1.17 crore Aadhaar numbers have been deactivated.

A similar exercise is ongoing in non-CRS states/UTs, with 6.7 lakh death records received and deactivation in progress," according to an official press release. People can also report the death of their family members on MyAadhaar Portal to deactivate the Aadhaar number and prevent its misuse.

How To Report Death Of Family Member on MyAadhaar Portal?

UIDAI has started a new services for people to report the death of their family members on MyAadhaar portal for the 24 CRS states and Union Territories (UTs).
To use the feature, individual must complete the due process of validation of the information submitted by the family member, and further action is taken for the deactivation.

-Visit the MyAadhaar website, ie https://myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in/file-complaint
-Check the home page.
-Select the option of 'Report Death of a Family Member'
-Login with your Aadhaar details and OTP.
-Enter the name, Aadhaar number, death registration number, death certificate details, gender of the deceased, date of the deceased, date of issue of death certificate, and other required details.
-Upload the death certificate.
-Enter the details of your relation with the deceased.
-Checkmark on the self-declaration and proceed.

This digital service currently covers 24 CRS-enabled States/UTs and allows a family member to report the death by submitting the deceased's Aadhaar number, Death Registration Number, and other demographic details after self-authentication.

The submitted data undergoes a thorough validation process before the Aadhaar number is deactivated. Efforts are underway to extend this service to the remaining States and UTs.

UIDAI is also taking support of State Governments in identifying the deceased Aadhaar number holders. As a pilot, demographic details of Aadhaar number holders aged more than 100 years are being shared with State Governments to verify whether the Aadhaar number holder is alive. Upon receipt of such verification report, necessary validation will be carried out before deactivating such Aadhaar number.

It is also important to validate the status of the deceased Aadhaar number holders prior to deactivation of their Aadhaar numbers, as it may have widespread ramifications for them. UIDAI is also exploring the possibility of sourcing death records from banks and other Aadhaar ecosystem entities maintaining such information.

What is Aadhaar?

Aadhaar is a 12-digit random number that is allotted to an individual seeking enrolment after completing the enrolment process. The unique number is allotted to eligible individuals. It is linked to their biometrics and hence, a person can't have duplicate Aadhaar cards. A person can apply for an Aadhaar card by visiting an Aadhaar enrolment centre and submitting a request along with valid supporting documents.
