Here's what the education sector got in Union Budget 2017-18.
Two new AIIMS
Two new All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Jharkhand and Gujarat as part of increasing healthcare in the country. "Two new All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) to be set up in Jharkhand and Gujarat," he said while reading out his Union Budget speech for 2017-18 in Parliament.
CBSE for academics only
CBSE and AICTE will be freed from additional duties. National Testing Agency to be instituted that will be in-charge of conducting all entrance exams for higher education. CBSS and AICTE will be freed their current administrative responsibilities and focus on improving academics only. National Testing Agency will conduct entrance exams like JEE and CAT.
Autonomy
The restructuring of University Grants Commission. Certain colleges and institutions to be identified and will be granted autonomous status based on the accreditation and affiliation.
Increase in seats
Steps to increase post-graduate seats for medical sciences. Innovation fund will be created for secondary education.
Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Kendra
Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Kendras to be extended to more than 600 districts across the country. 110 centers to be opened to help youth get access to employment opportunities abroad. Rs 2,200 crore to be set aside for investment in vocational training. Big employment opportunities to come up in the tourism sector. Similar schemes will be launched for leather and footwear sectors also.
Push to science education
Proposal to launch a system of measuring learning in schools. Emphasis on science education and flexible curriculum.
Budget for backward
The focus will be the 3,479 educationally backward blocks where the government proposes to introduce the practice of measuring annual learning outcome in schools.
Online education
Use of DTH channels to link online courses available on the Swayam platform. Students will have access to more than 1500 courses. The government will also tie-up with DTH channels for the same. "SWAYAM platform for free of cost digital learnings launched to bridge the digital drive for students, especially girls, who have not been able to join the mainstream of the knowledge economy," Finance Minister said.
