On the backdrop of reports that claim of Aadhaar details being fetched from third party websites and also a Google search query is leading to Aadhaar details of several people, the Aadhaar issuing authority on Saturday asked people to exercise "due precautions" when sharing Aadhaar details online.

In a statement the UIDAI said, "People share their personal information, including Aadhaar on internet, to some or other service provider or vendor to get the services and when they put their details on internet they should take due precautions as required in any digital activities".
Also, the authority added that the alleged issue of Aadhaar information available via Google search query of Mera Aadhaar, Meri Pehchan has "nothing to do with the security of Aadhaar and its database".
To this effect, UIDAI once again asserted the robust orientation of the Aadhaar system by saying that "publication or posting of Aadhaar cards by some unscrupulous people have absolutely no bearing on UIDAI and not the least on Aadhaar security". It further added that "none of the Aadhaar cards shown are taken from UIDAI database".
It also emphasized the fact that like other identity documents, Aadhaar too is not a confidential ID and merely knowing the details of someone's Aadhaar is not sufficient for impersonating that person as biometric authentication is done to establish ones identity.
The UIDAI noted that ""If anybody unauthorisedly publishes someone's personal information such as Aadhaar card, mobile number, bank account, photograph, etc., he can be sued for civil damages by the person whose privacy right is infringed".
When providing Aadhaar details it should be protected for ensuring privacy of an individual.
