The total tea production in the country was estimated to be 1325.05 million kilograms, a surge of 74.56 million kilograms as compared to 2016-2017. In terms of percentage, the increase attributes to around 6% growth.
The total quality of tea exported for fiscal 2017-2018 stands at 256.57 million kilograms, whereas the foreign exchange realized $785.92 million, from the export of Indian tea.
The quantity of tea exported during the period 2017-2018, increased by 12.71% and stood at 28.94 million kilograms as against 2016-2017. The revenue reaped from the export saw a rise of $95.19 million, up by 13.78%.
In terms of rupee value, the total exports from India stood at Rs 5064.88 crores during 2017-2018. The value realization increased by 9.33% to reach Rs 432.38 crore.
The improvement in exports was mainly driven by the following countries: Egypt (increase by 7.49 million kilograms), Iran (increase by 6.95 million kilograms), Pakistan (increase by 4.96 million kilograms), China (increase by 2.91 million kilograms) and Russia (increase by 2.89 million kilograms).
The previous record for the highest quantity of tea exports was reported in the fiscal year 1976-77 when the total quantity export reached 242.42 million kilograms.
