Cargo handling in major ports of India was up by 1.78 percent to 56.81 million tonnes (MT) in the month of April 2018 from 55.82 MT in the same month last year as per a statement released by the ministry of shipping.

"The major ports in India have recorded a growth of 1.78% and together handled 56.81 Million Tonnes of cargo during the period April 2018 as against 55.82 Million Tonnes handled during the corresponding period of previous year," said the statement.

The ports that have registered a positive growth include Kolkata (including Haldia), Paradip, Visakhapatnam, Kamarajar, Chennai, Cochin, New Mangalore, JNPT (Jawaharlal Nehru Port near Mumbai) and Deendayal.

Deendayal (Kandla) Port handled the highest volume of 9.32 million tonnes (16.41% share) in the month of April 2018.

Together, these five ports handled around 60% of all the major port traffic.
