As per the data released by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) on direct tax statistics this week, 10 states make up for 88.3 percent of the total collection, which is Rs 8.85 lakh crore out of the Rs 10.02 lakh crore for the financial year 2017-18.

In terms of growth rate, Haryana was the best performer, registering 102 percent rise with a comparatively lower tax base, followed by Karnataka at 67 percent, Tamil Nadu at 51 percent, Delhi at 50 percent, Rajasthan at 47 percent, West Bengal at 43 percent, Andhra Pradesh at 42 percent and Maharastra at close to 40 percent. Despite a comparatively lower increase in growth, Maharashtra was the biggest contributor of direct tax collection at Rs 3,84,277.5 crore. Among all the states, Uttar Pradesh was the only state to report a fall in the collection by 13.42 percent.

Other important highlights of the data release were:
- A constant growth in direct tax-GDP ratio was observed over last three years and the ratio of 5.98 percent in FY 2017-18 is the best DT-GDP ratio in the last 10 years.
- There is a growth of more than 80 percent in the number of returns filed in the last four financial years from 3.79 crore in FY 2013-14 (base year) to 6.85 crore in FY 2017-18.
- The number of persons filing returns of income has also increased by about 65 percent during this period from 3.31 crore in FY 2013-14 to 5.44 crore in FY 2017-18.
The statement released by CBDT also said, "The total number of taxpayers (including corporates, firms, HUFs, etc.) showing income of above Rs. 1 crore has also registered sharp increase over the three-year horizon. While 88,649 taxpayers disclosed income above Rs. 1 crore in AY 2014-15, the figure was 1,40,139 for AY 2017-18 (growth of about 60 percent). Similarly, the number of individual taxpayers disclosing income above Rs. 1 crore increased during the period under reference from 48,416 to 81,344, which translates into a growth of 68 percent."
