Shaktikanta Das was today appointed the Governor of Reserve Bank of India. He replaces Dr Urjit Patel, who resigned on Dec 10.
The appointment of Das comes at a time when the government of India and the RBI have been at loggerheads over various issues. It would hence be paramount to see if the Das can maintain total independence at Mint Street.
Das served in various positions for both the Government of India and the Government of Tamil Nadu the Tamil Nadu government. He is a former secretary at India's department of economic affairs. Das has been appointed for a period of 3-years.

Shaktikanta Das was appointed as Union Economic Affairs Secretary in August 2016. He also held various positions with the Government of Tamil Nadu. One will have to watch the reactions of the stock markets and the money market on the appointment of Das.
