The central government has given its go ahead for levying Aviation Security Fee (ASF) and as a result air travel is set to become expensive. Air passengers will need to pay ASF and not Passenger Service Fee (PSF). The ASF will come into effect from July 1 as per the Ministry of Civil Aviation.

"In exercise of the power conferred under Rule 88 A of The Aircraft Rules, 1937, the Central Government has accorded the approval for levy of Aviation Security Fee", the order by the ministry said.
The rate for ASF for domestic passengers will be Rs 150 per embarking passengers and in case of international flyers it will be charged at the rate of US$ 4.85 or rupee equivalent per embarking passengers.
The aviation security fee will be used for paying security dues at airports.
Currently, PSF is being charged under rule 88 of the Indian Aircraft Rules 1937 and collected by the licensee from embarking passengers. The total PSF comprises 2 components namely Security Component and Facilitation Component.
So, the new ASF will replace the Passenger Service Fee (Security Component) that is being levied at the rate of Rs 130 per embarking passenger for domestic travellers and USD 3.25 per embarking passenger for foreign travellers.
