If you are a Delhi resident, you will now be able to choose a car registration number of your choice by paying Rs 25,000.
Auctions are conducted by the Delhi transport department for those looking for some of the fancy registration numbers like 0001 or 9999. These numbers are given on paying a hefty minimum reserve price. The department now wants to extend this choice to all the car buyers at the time of purchase itself, unless its not one of the fancy numbers.

In notification, Delhi's transport department said that it will allow the registration number allocation for a flat fee of Rs 25,000 at the car dealership itself. The earlier process required a fee of Rs 20,000 and a number of rounds of the department.
This will allow car buyers to opt for numbers that are of personal significance to them, like a date of birth. They can simply make the registration online at the car dealership without having to visit the transport department office.
The car dealership will show the buyer a series of numbers available at the department to make a choice. The buyer will have an half-an-hour time window to select and the fee will have to paid online.
Meanwhile, two wheeler buyers can also opt for fancy numbers through e-auction where the minimum reserve price for the series 0001 for two wheelers would be Rs 50,000, Rs 30,000 for series 0002 to 0009, and so on.
These auctions have been a major source of revenue for the transport department due to the fondness for "VIP numbers" among Delhiites.
