There has been big confusion around the Aadhaar-PAN linking deadline and fears that PAN cards will be deactivated after December 31, 2025. However, the reality is more nuanced. PAN cards will not be universally deactivated on December 31, 2025, but certain categories of PAN holders must act before the deadline to avoid serious financial consequences.

According to the Income Tax Department and rules notified under Section 139AA, most unlinked PAN cards have already become inoperative after the June 30, 2023 deadline, unless reactivated by paying a Rs. 1,000 penalty. A special extension, however, applies to a limited group of PAN holders.
Who Needs to Link PAN with Aadhaar by December 31, 2025?
The December 31, 2025 deadline is NOT for everyone. It applies only to individuals who were issued a PAN card using Aadhaar Enrolment ID before October 1, 2024; these PANs must be linked with Aadhaar by December 31, 2025. No penalty will be charged if Aadhaar-PAN is linked within this deadline, and the failure of the same will make the PAN inoperative from January 1, 2026.
If you fall into this category and miss the deadline, your PAN will stop working just like other unlinked PANs.
The Central Board of Direct Taxes has clearly stated that inoperative PANs cannot be used for financial or tax-related transactions.
Consequences of an Inoperative PAN Card
If your PAN card is inoperative, you could face multiple financial and compliance issues:
1. No ITR Filing or Tax Refunds: You cannot file Income Tax Returns (ITR) for AY 2026-27, and any eligible income tax refunds will not be credited.
2. Higher TDS and Failed Credits: Higher TDS will be deducted on salary, interest, and investments. Additionally, salary credits, SIP debits, and mutual fund transactions may fail also. Banks and financial institutions may reject transactions. If the Aadhaar PAN is not linked, the PAN becomes unusable for mutual funds, stock market trading, property purchases and high-value transactions.
In short, an inoperative PAN can disrupt your entire financial life.
How to Check PAN-Aadhaar Link Status Online
Follow these simple steps to check whether your PAN is linked with Aadhaar:
]
Step 1: Visit the official e-filing portal of the Income Tax Department.
Step 2: Select "Link Aadhaar Status".
Step 3: Enter your PAN number and Aadhaar number.
Step 4: Click "View Link Aadhaar Status".
Possible messages you may see are "Linked", which means your PAN is active. "Not linked" in that case means Aadhaar-PAN linking is required immediately. Another message is "Linking in progress".
PAN-Aadhaar Link Status via SMS
You can also check or initiate linking through SMS. Send the message in this format, UIDPAN, and send it to 567678 or 56161. This option is helpful if you do not have immediate internet access.
