The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has started testing the Instrumental Landing System (ILS) signals at the under-construction Navi Mumbai International Airport. This airport is expected to begin its first phase of operations by March 2025, according to sources on Wednesday.

The ILS testing began on Tuesday and is anticipated to continue until Saturday. During this period, AAI will evaluate various aspects of the ILS operations on the runway. ILS is a precision approach aid that uses two radio beams to provide pilots with vertical and horizontal guidance during landing.
Testing Procedures and Components
A source explained that the localiser component of the ILS offers lateral guidance, helping pilots align with the runway's central line. The glider path component provides vertical guidance, such as altitude information. According to the source, around 20 tests are conducted before implementing the ILS for operational use.
During these tests, the accuracy of both horizontal and vertical guidance signals is assessed to ensure safe operations. An airport official confirmed that calibration testing has been successfully completed at Navi Mumbai International Airport.
Development and Capacity
The Navi Mumbai International Airport project, developed by Adani Group, consists of five phases. Once fully operational, it will have a total handling capacity of 9 crore passengers annually. The first phase alone will be capable of handling 2 crore passengers per year.
The ongoing testing is crucial for ensuring that all systems function correctly before the airport begins operations. The successful implementation of ILS will enhance the safety and efficiency of aircraft landings at the new airport.
The conclusion wraps up the key points discussed in the article, highlighting the importance of the ILS testing and its role in preparing Navi Mumbai International Airport for its upcoming operations.
