The Indian government has abolished the wireless operating license and launched a regulatory sandbox for quick and online approval of product testing in the telecom sector. This move aims to simplify the process for operating wireless devices and encourage innovation in the industry.
The Indian government has taken a significant step in streamlining the telecom sector by abolishing the wireless operating license and introducing a regulatory sandbox for quick and online approval of product testing. Union Communications and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw made the announcement during the curtain raiser of the telecom sector event India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2024.

Elimination of Wireless Operating License
Vaishnaw revealed that the wireless operating license was abolished a few months ago, but the formalization process is underway. Previously, individuals and organizations had to obtain a wireless operating license to operate wireless devices. However, this requirement has been eliminated, making it easier for businesses and individuals to deploy wireless technologies.
Introduction of Regulatory Sandbox
The minister also unveiled a regulatory sandbox for the telecom sector. This initiative aims to provide online approval for product testing at minimal charges, enabling even students to test their products. The regulatory sandbox will facilitate innovation and encourage the development of new technologies in the telecom industry.
Collaboration for a Grander IMC
Vaishnaw emphasized the need for collaboration among industry bodies such as ICEA, MAIT, and Nasscom to make IMC Asia's biggest technology event. He set a target of 1000 exhibitors and encouraged the inclusion of tech-oriented organizations, including those involved in electric vehicles, connected cars, and IoT devices. The minister believes that such collaborations will elevate IMC's status and attract global attention.
IMC 2023 Highlights and Future Goals
The IMC 2023 witnessed the participation of 247 exhibitors, 17 ministries, over 150,000 attendees from 67 countries, and 513 speakers across 86 sessions. Building on this success, the upcoming IMC 2024 aims to surpass these numbers and establish itself as a global-scale tech and telecom event. The event will coincide with the World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly (WTSA) 2024 and the Global Standards Symposium (GSS) 2024.
Involving College Students
Vaishnaw stressed the importance of involving college students in WTSA and IMC. He announced that the government will collaborate with Indian Railways to provide logistics support and bring students to these events. This initiative aims to engage young minds in the latest technological advancements and foster innovation in the telecom sector.
Industry Response
The telecom industry welcomed the government's initiatives. COAI Chairman PK Mittal lauded the abolition of the wireless operating license, stating that it will simplify business operations and expedite the rollout of wireless services. COAI Director General SP Kochhar expressed his commitment to positioning IMC as Asia's largest digital technology showcase platform and highlighted the event's growing global recognition.
The government's decision to abolish the wireless operating license and introduce a regulatory sandbox demonstrates its commitment to fostering innovation and growth in the telecom sector. By simplifying regulations and encouraging collaboration, the government aims to transform IMC into a world-class tech and telecom event. These initiatives are expected to benefit businesses, researchers, and students, driving the advancement of technology in India and beyond.
