Indian private airline SpiceJet has become the focal point of investor interest, with the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA) making a strategic move by acquiring shares from the open market. A SpiceJet spokesperson confirmed the acquisition, stating, "Yes, ADIA has acquired shares of the airline from the open market."
This latest development comes on the back of SpiceJet's successful capital infusion of Rs 1,060 crore through a preferential issue. The airline has been actively working to streamline its balance sheet, addressing past issues with lessors, and resolving a significant Rs 250 crore settlement with Celestial Aviation.

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) have taken note of SpiceJet's positive trajectory, resulting in a substantial surge in the airline's stock price, effectively doubling its value. The ownership of FIIs in SpiceJet has witnessed a remarkable surge, increasing from 0.33% in December 2023 to 6.21% in February 2024.
Key investors, including Aries Opportunities Fund Limited, Elara India Opportunities Fund Limited, and aircraft leasing giant Carlyle Aviation Partners, have already secured substantial stakes in SpiceJet. Zee Business Sources close to the airline revealed that a portion of the recent funds infusion will be directed towards settling past liabilities.
A milestone for SpiceJet occurred on February 28, as the airline successfully concluded a Rs 250 crore dispute with Celestial Aviation through amicable negotiations. Celestial Aviation, a subsidiary of AerCap, stands as one of the largest aircraft lessor groups globally. The resolution of this longstanding issue has undoubtedly contributed to the positive sentiment surrounding SpiceJet's financial outlook.
Despite closing with a 1.4% dip at Rs 62.65 per share on March 4 (Monday) on the Bombay Stock Exchange, SpiceJet's stock has offered returns of nearly 75% in the last year. Investors are closely watching the airline's trajectory, and the recent ADIA investment has only added to the optimism surrounding SpiceJet's future.
Industry experts attribute SpiceJet's attractiveness to investors to its proactive approach in addressing financial challenges, resolving disputes with lessors, and securing substantial capital through strategic fund infusions.
