Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently called on academia, startups, students, and researchers to collaborate in creating innovative solutions. He emphasised moving away from the old belief that the government should handle everything. While presenting awards for the Indigenous Web Browser and Chips to Start Up (C2S) Programme, Vaishnaw highlighted India's potential to transition from a service-oriented nation to a product-focused one.

Encouraging Innovation and Collaboration
Vaishnaw stressed the importance of collaboration among various sectors to foster innovation. He noted that the traditional mindset of relying solely on government institutions has shifted. Now, there is a need for collective efforts from academia, startups, students, and researchers to drive new solutions. "Old mindset where only certain government institutions would be developing everything has now given way to a new mindset, where...academia, startups, students, and researchers...must join together to create new solutions," Vaishnaw stated.
The minister also highlighted the significance of India's service industry while advocating for growth in manufacturing. He pointed out that India should not only excel in services but also become a manufacturing powerhouse. This dual focus is essential for comprehensive economic development.
Diverse Chip Development Strategy
Discussing chip development, Vaishnaw explained the need for a diverse approach. He mentioned that chips vary in value and volume, requiring different strategies. Some chips may have low value but high volume, others mid-value and mid-volume, and some high value with low volume. "We have to play in the entire spectrum and that is the thought process with which we are moving," he noted.
In recognition of their contributions to indigenous browser development, Team Zoho received the first prize of Rs 1 crore. Team Ping was awarded Rs 75 lakh as the second prize, while Team Ajna secured Rs 50 lakh for third place.
Security Through Indigenous Browsers
S Krishnan, Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and IT (Meity), underscored the necessity of indigenous browsers for data security within India. He stressed the importance of having browsers that can be fully trusted to protect sensitive information.
The push towards indigenous technology development aligns with India's broader goals of enhancing self-reliance and securing digital infrastructure. By fostering innovation across sectors, India aims to strengthen its position as both a service and product nation.
